Continuous scrap melting to produce pig iron - by adding scrap and carbon to iron melt and oxygen blowing

In continuous scrap melting, preheated scrap is introduced into a bath of molten iron contg. =2% C. followed by addn. of carbon-contg. material, to maintain the character of the bath, as well as oxygen. The energy necessary for melting the scrap is provided by the exothermic reaction initiated by oxygen blowing. Pref. the carbon-contg. material is coal, which cannot be used in coke ovens, and is added continuously to the bath in a gaseous vehicle (CO or CO2) by means of an immersion lance. Method allows continuous prodn. of pig iron for steel prod. without using large amts. of energy.
