The stationary shaft is surrounded by a sleeve (5) forming part of a rotor. The shaft has a number of discs (3) with radial holes which eject liquid by centrifugal force so that it forms a liquid ring in the annular space (8). When the rotor is stationary, it is supported by the tapered rings (9). On starting, air is supplied through the hole (2) so that the rotor runs on an air bearing. The inner ring (9) is then moved axially and liquid supplied through the discs (3). Rings of high pressure liquid are generated in the space (8) due to centrifugal force and these liquid rings support the rotor (5).
