The circuit breaker arc quenching chamber overcomes gas flow problems in the arc zone and disturbance of the gas flow associated with filtered channels. Each pole of the contact breaker has an extinction device based on a gas filled, sealed cylinder (11). Normally, SF6 is used. The moving cylindrical electrode (12) is operated by an insulating rod (14) moving axially with respect to the tube. Contact with this electrode is maintained by a sliding electrode (16) at its contacting end. The gas route is via a non-return valve (32) within the electrode.
