In the device focussing of refraction of light generally including infra-red emissions is by modifying the refractive index of the local atmosphere by means of pressure waves generated at a focal point forming a convex or concave lens as required. The generator consists of a group of transducers (10) which may be dielectric spark gaps, mechanical vibrators etc. each having a conical reflector (11). The pressure waves (3) from these are directed onto a central reflector (9) before transmission away from the source. The lens form is controlled by varying (13) the phase difference between the transducers.
