Generator is of the sealed cartride type and contains, e.g. potassium peroxide, giving off oxygen when contacted by the moisture in exhaled air. The starter is a separate container communicating with the cartridge and hving a partition separating a water store from the auxiliary mass. The spray device is pref. a piston having fixed to it a spike which can puncture the partition. The piston is pref. locked by means of a rod extending from it through the container, against which a locking pin passing through the rod bears. The starter is pref. mounted partially within the cartridge, the water store projecting from one end of the cartridge, and may be detachable, from it. The starter operates rapidly regardless of the orientation of the generator cartridge. The quantities of water and potassium peroxide in the starter can be arranged to ensure ideal reaction conditions. The replaceable container permits a partially used generator cartridge to be reused.
