The coupler may be used in the transverse movement joints of concrete highways, comprising two semi-circular metal shells (7, 7a) housing a compressible oval section block (8). The block maintains a diametric gap between the shells, the unit being compressed into a cylindrical form for insertion in a blind drilling centred on the slap joint. The shells may be of cast iron or lightweight metal alloy with semi-circular end walls and specially contoured (9, 9a) bores locating the block. The latter may be of elastomere with a steel core (10) and having a shore hardness of 40 to 90. An elastomere seal (11) with a shore hardness of less than 50 may be provided in the joint between the shells.
