The parent patent described furnace roof modular elements of square or rectangular form of unit surface =1m2, each consisting of a sheet of steel with flanged edges. The elements can be assembled together by bolts passing through holes in the flanged edges, which can compress the rebated parts of the outside layers of refractory lining of the elements. This outside lining is based on high strength ceramic fibres entrapped between the edges of adjacent modules. In this addition, a stainless steel shee with flanged edges is placed outside the ordinary steel sheet, with a layer of fibrous material, pref. rock wool between the metal sheets. The refractory lining is then formed on the stainless steel, and is compressed between the side edges of the stainless steel. Corrosion of the steel sheet due to attack by sulphurous and other acid gases to be found in the furnace atmosphere when the temp. is above the dew point, and penetrating the refractory fibrous lining is avoided.
