The deflection characteristics of roadway are determined from detector on the ground as almost instantaneous shocks are applied. A loaded vehicle is rolled along roadway at constant speed to apply deformation forces. The vehicle has several axles with wheels (1) and an endless belt (2) is driven by motor wheels (3, 4) in sync. with main drive shaft. The belt carries several inertial deflection sensors (10) which periodically contact the ground. Conducting strips integral with the belt permit electrical contact (11, 12) and permit separation (13) and recording (14) of signals as pneumatic jack (17) provides synchronised impacts to ground as sensors are positioned.
