A press is used to impress the indentations of a tool (3) onto a file blank. The press may incorporate two tools in vertical opposition and brought together to effect the simultaneous treatment of the two major faces of the blank. The press may include stamp holders into which the tools are clamped (4, 5) fixed (7) and movable holders (2) being mounted on a bench (T) and an overhead slide (C) respectively. An adjust able stirrup (8) locates the shank of the blank in relationship to the fixed lower holder (7), the stirrup being mounted on a sole plate (6) forming a location stop.
