As metallic products at a high temp. cool down their magnetic state changes. This is measured by subjecting the product to a continuous magnetic field and determining flux variations along its length. A water cooled sensor (1) is positioned above a moving platform (3) which carries steel wire loops (4). The sensor generates a magnetic field from a permanent magnet (8) and a receiver comprising a coil (9) around the magnet to detect flux variations. the coil output is passed to a signal conditioning circuit (2) containing an amplifier (23) and a filter (24). The effective value of the signal is calculated (25) for observation on a screen (26).
