The flexible metal bellows are used as an expansion joint in pipework. The end of the bellows is fitted over the end of the pipe and secured by a fillet weld. Such welds form stress raisers which are liable to cause failure under fluctuating loads. This advantage is avoided by fitting the end (14) of the bellows (11) inside the pipe (12). The pipe bore (15) is enlarged to match the outside dia. of the bellows extension and the groove formed between the end of the extension and the strip in the pipe bore is filled with weld.
