The cleaver a hand-held housing from which a cleaving blade projects through a slot in which the blade can reciprocate. Inside the housing, the blade extends from a block mounted to slide up and down on guide pillars. A retractable catch on the block engages a motor-driven continuous chain which lifts the block from its lowest position. The block is lifted against the resistance of a compression spring. As the block nears the top of its stroke the catch is automatically released from the chain. The block is then projected down by the loaded spring to provide a cutting stroke of the blade. The housing pref. has a pistol grip handle with trigger switch to actuates the chain motor. Displacement of the trigger pref. also adjust the force with which the block is returned to its lowest position by advancing or delaying the release of the cathc. The housing is pref. suspended from a counterbalancing hoist to facilitate manipulation of the cleaver. The reduction of manual effort greatly increases the productive capacity of a single worker.
