A continuous casting process involves pouring liquid metal into an open ended vertical mould located on a casting platform and withdrawing the bar from the lower end of the mould during solidification. A dummy bar is mounted in a vertical position extending from the base of the instalation to a position above the platform and is moved above the platform in axial alignment with and above the mould. The bar is then introduced by way of its lower end inot the mould and moved to a desired starting position and after casting has started, the dummy bar is sepd, from the initial cast bar and brought back into a vertical position sepd. from the line of casting. Used esp. for the continuous vertical casting of large dia. steel slabs or bars. Process enables dummy bars to be brought back to their starting positions more rapidly to enable the time lag between successive castings to be substantially reduced.
