The demountable framework supports a raised working platform (12) and converts into a step ladder or a simple extending ladder. The assembly has rectangular foot and head (17) frames connected to two ladder-form end frames (18, 113) and has diagonal bracing (11). A permanent pin joint (111) many connect the head frame to one end frame (18), these two members constituting a step ladder when disconnected from the parent frame. The remaining end frame (18) may be used individually as a ladder, or its feet may slide into sleeves (25) attached to the counter frame to form an extended ladder. The free ends of the long members of the head frame may return to form spigots housing in the top of the end frame, all connections being of the sprung ball catch type.
