The handling machine has pincers incorporated on the free end (54) of a pivoting arm (12, 24) with an intermediate pinned (23) elbow joint. Lower (25, 29) and upper (26, 30) pairs of pin-jointed links connect the elbow pin (23) to a plate (7) supporting the main fulcrum shaft (11). All axes align horizontally parallel, the arrangement constituting a compound folding parallelogram frame which maintains the outer limb (24) vertical at all times. The pairs of links are offset in vertical planes straddling the inner member (12), the arm being pivoted by using a fixed but pivotable jack to apply a couple to the main fulcrum shaft (11).
