Novel alkylsubstituted N-benzylideneanilines and liquid crystal compositions containing same

Novel alkylsubstituted N-benzylideneanilines of formula ##STR1## in which n and m each represent zero or integers of from 1 to 8 and wherein the sum of n plus m is at least 6; the novel formula (I) compounds are suitable for use as dielectric component of electro-optic LC-display devices. Liquid crystal compositions containing the novel compounds for use as dielectric phase in nematic or smectic electro-optic LC-display devices and an improved method for producing 4- alkylsubstituted and 4,4'- dialkylsubstituted N-benzylideneanilines including the novel formula (I) compounds by condensation of the corresponding aldehydes and anilines in bulk.
