PURPOSE:To let smooth side freeze layers to be formed over the entire part in the electrolytic cell by making the thickness of the heat-insulating heat-retaining material layer between the side wall carbon layer and furnace shell thin in the portion in the cell where the flow of bath or molten Al is large. CONSTITUTION:Over the portion l' in the electrolytic cell where the flow of electrolytic bath or molten Al is large, the thickness of the heat-insulating heat-retaining material layer 8' to be interposed between the side wall carbon lining layer and furnace shell 1 is formed thinner than the heat-insulating heat-retaining material layer 8 of the other portions. Thereby, the increase in the heat radiation from the side wall surface in this portion l' is achieved and the partial retreating of the size freeze layer 12 like broken line 12' is suppressed, thus the inside surface of the side wall cell is covered with the always uniformly evened side freeze layer. Hence, the reduction in the furnace life is prevented and the electrolysis operation accomplished with good efficiency always in a stable state.
