1385146 Separation of copper and zinc ANACONDA CO 26 June 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 30275/73 Heading C1A Scrap metal containing large proportions of copper and zinc is leached with ammonium carbonate solution in the presence of oxygen to dissolve the copper and zinc as the metal ammonium carbonates, from which the copper value is removed by treating with a water immiscable organic liquid ion exchanger, preferably a kerosene solution of a hydroxyoxime from which the copper value is removed by eluting with an acid solution from which the copper can be electrowon, the zinc ammonium carbonate remaining in solution being treated with metallic zinc to remove other metal impurities followed by treatment under pressure with CO 2 to precipitate a zinc carbonate which can be calcined to give a pure zinc oxide.
