The advancing mine support system is used with a face conveyor above which a coal cutting machine travels along the coal face. The supports are operated sequentially in sets, and are operated by a control system so that supports at the cutting point are not advanced as the machine passes. This prevents quantities of cut material being deposited under the conveyor itself. Each set of mine supports is controlled by its own valve, the action being initiated by sensing devices operated by the movement of the mining machine. A stop valve opposes the application of pressure to the telescopic cylinders until the machine has passed. The sensing devices are switches which generate control signals for the valve operating system.
