The O2 may also carry solid materials injected onto or into the bath of metal; and the nozzle outlet holes are formed by separate plate fixed mechanically to the bottom end of the lance. The plate is pref. inserted in the end so the bottom edge of the latter is lower than the bottom surface of the plate. The plate is pref. made of a refractory-metal or -ceramic, or from a combination of these materials and is pref. provided with one or more small holes for the escape of gas at a speed slower than that of the gas travelling through the main nozzle outlet holes. The plate is detachably mounted in the lance end via screws or keys to it can be easily and rapidly replaced without interfering with the chambers in the wall of the lance through which cooling water is circulated.
