A personnel lifting platform, requiring no external drive power comprises a frame 10 having a floor 11 and including channel-sectioned uprights 12 mounting guide rollers 60 which run on vertical guide rails 50, Figure 6. A suspension cable 70 extends upwards from the frame 10 and over a pulley at the top of the guide rails, and a compensating cable 71 correspondingly extends downwards and around a pulley at the bottom of the guide rails, the two non-illustrated ends of the cables 70, 71 being anchored to a counterweight (80, Figures 7 and 8) which is adjustable for balancing the frame 10 and its personnel load. A taut braking cable 26 extends vertically adjacent the guide rails and is wrapped around a brake cylinder 20 having a braking mechanism 30 comprising spring-applied brake shoes. The platform is operated by an occupier releasing the brake 30 by means of a pedal 40 which rotates a pair of discs 36 carrying camming rollers (37), and then pulling or pushing an adjacent structure to raise or lower the platform which is arrested when the pedal 40 is released.
