The self-locking device for securing livestock in a livestock stand has two panel-shaped retaining members (5, 6) which are fastened around a horizontal, pivotable tube (1). Said retaining members (5, 6) are aligned with each other in the axial direction of the tube and are spaced apart from each other by a locking slot (7) which widens inwards from the outer side of the retaining members. One of the retaining members (6) is provided with a pocket (11) between the two panels of the retaining member (6) for receiving a blocking disc (10), which is mounted, such that it can move slightly, in the pocket (11) and, in the locking position of the device, closes off a blocking region on the mouth end of the locking slot (7) by the force of gravity. A tether (8), e.g. a tethering rope, fastened on the neck of the animal to be secured is able, when the animal enters into the stand, to push the blocking disc (10) inwards into the locking slot (7) and thus, itself, to pass into said slot. The blocking disc (10), falling back into its closed position once again after passing the slot mouth, fixes the tether (8) in the locking slot (7), and the animal is thus secured. By pivoting the retaining members (5, 6) up, the blocking disc (10) falls back into the pocket (11), the tether (8) coming out of the slot (7) and the animal being able to free itself from the self-locking device.
