In the regeneration by heating of active carbon used for cleaning contaminated liqs., the spent carbon particles are introduced into the space between electrodes arranged at a distance from each other and an electric current is passed between the electrodes via the particles. The particles are thereby heated and regenerated, partic. as a result of the heat evolved due to the electrical resistance of the particles themselves and of the contact resistance between particles. No steam or fuel gas is required. Loss of active carbon by attrition is reduced by the use of a stationary (as opposed to a fluidised) bed. The cost of the installation is relatively low. The temp. profile in the bed can be easily controlled. Direct current, single-phase or three-phase alternating current can be used, and the plant can work continuously or discontinuously.
