1312051 Coating A E STALEY MFG CO 15 April 1970 [28 April 1969 21 Oct 1969] 17955/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A coating composition comprises a latex of a copolymer of (a) 70-95% vinylidene chloride, (b) 0.5-30% of a hydroxyalkyl ester of an alpha-beta ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, (c) 0.3-3% of sulphoalkyl ester of an , #-ethylenically unsaturated acid, (d) 0-5% of an unsaturated carboxylic acid and (e) up to 29.5% of a different monomer free from acid or hydroxyalkyl groups. In the examples the latices are obtained by emulsion polymerisation using a seed latex from vinylidene chloride and (b) hydroxyethyl acrylate or hydroxypropyl methacrylate (c) sodio 2-sulphoethyl methacrylate, (d) acrylic acid and (e) methyl acrylate. The products are used to coat corona discharge treated polypropylene and unprimed polyethylene.
