The movement of the dredger vessel is achieved by hinges on the pontoon of poles attached to the craft. At one end, the hinges are fixed to the pontoon by means of a swivel shaft, whilst the other end engages around the pole with some clearance. Normally, the two hinges (1, 2) are located to starboard and to port at the stern of the vessel, and can be moved forwards and backwards in the line of the vessel. There are fixed points (3) for the hinges on the pontoon. The hinge action enables the craft to be relocated over a predetermined distance for the commencement of a new cut.
