The invention concerns a method and an arrangement for transporting and turning timber on a cross conveyor 1 such that all of its sides are exposed and can be inspected. For this, the cross conveyor has an axle 6 supported by each cross row of its dogs 3 with pivoting support element 7 with an engaging element 8 for receiving and holding of a piece of timber and tilting it down into a dike 4 between the dogs for exposure of two sides of the timber, and with co-operation of the support element the dogs and their axle are overturned into the adjacent dike 4 to expose the other two sides of the piece of timber. The piece of timber is held by means of the support elements and their engagement elements in a balanced position relative to the pivot axle of the support elements. A feeding conveyor 12, 19 is arranged at the timber feeding end of the cross conveyor in order to feed a piece of timber on the support element 7, and furthermore the feeding conveyor 12 can be raised and lowered or is provided with folding dogs 20, figure 4, 5, for adjustable feeding of the piece of timber on the support element and its taking up the position of balance.
