An industrial sewing machine includes a needle, presser foot and feed dog at a stitching position and a feeler mounted on a pivot arm engaging a curved edge of a workpiece at a position disposed laterally outside of the needle. Laterally inwardly of the needle is a presser plate which cooperates with an abutment to clamp the workpiece when actuated by the feeler whereby the workpiece pivots about the point at which it is clamped to ensure the curved edge of the workpiece passes through the stitching position. A curved edge of a workpiece which is being stitched is automatically guided through the stitching position. The sewing machine is used for stitching shoes.
