The static converter circuit provides its full output power with a correct phase relationship to the supply which it will be replacing in a very short time. During normal supply periods energy is stored to be fed into the load system, and when priming or firing signals are allowed through to the inverter by interruption of the normal supply, the inverter is supplied by some standby d.c. source such as batteries providing both polarities. This ensures that the correct polarity is available at the instant of switching. Switching is by electromechanical relays, thyristors or triacs (Tr1, Tr2), the switching operation being synchronised from sensors in the switching network.
