A picture tube for television has metal collars to prevent implosion. The collars are fitted by applying progressive pressure on the surface of the tube and by welding the ends of the collars. The collars, are made of metal strips (3). The ends of the strips (3) have a tongue (10) and a mating recess (9). There are holes near the ends of each strip (3) and also in the tongues (10) and mating recesses (9). The holes in the strips are used to submit the straps to tension during assembly to the tube. The holes in the tongues and mating recesses (9,10) are used for welding the collars to each other. Welding is by electric arc process using the collars as poles.
