The joint comprises two parts with mating surfaces and of non-porous alumina, each for fixing to a bone. The first has a metal rod, and a head secured to it with the mating surface. The portion of the second part coming in contact with the bone to which it is to be secured has roughened portions, two dimensions of which at least are of the order of one millimetre. Where used as a hip joint, the part in contact with the hip bone can have grooves a millimetre wide and deep. An anchoring boss can also be provided, and where there are more than one bosses, one can have an axis perpendicular to the equatorial plane of the convex face of the part, there being roughened portions on the bosses as on the main part.
