Hydraulic fluids comprising 20-96 wt.% of a borate ester of a glycol monoether as the base fluid, 2-40 wt.% of a glycol ether formal, and 0-78 wt.% diluent, additives, such as an antioxidant and a pH and corrosion control agent pref. also being incorporated. E.g. brake fluids. The fluids have low sensitivity to water, good VI, are of low cost, are odourless and colourless, have high compatibility with other fluids, a low rate of corrosivity and satisfactory compatibility with rubber.
