The process heats pieces of flat material, e.g. blanks to be forged into components of pliers, shears, spanners, etc. The pieces are indexed from a magazine between two heated plates, and then clamped between them by moving the plates towards each other, to give direct heat transfer being also heated by radiation. They are then released by the plates indexed, and gripped by them again for further heating. A piece is discharged from the plates with each indexing movement.
