FLUID SPRAY HEAD AND METHOD ADAPTED TO SPRAY SPECIFIC PATTERNAbstract of the DisclosureIn a sprinkler apparatus, an improved fluid spray headhaving the ability to adjust the flow rate of fluid to the dis-charge orifices, to adjust the precipitation rate over the groundarea sprayed, and to spray a specifically shaped non-circular ares. The improved fluid spray head has a plurality of circumferentially-spaced discharge orifices having cross-sectional areas which prog-ressively vary in a manner such that the relative cross-sectionalareas of the discharge orifices are proportional to the square ofthe distance that their respective spray streams are desired totravel so that the perimeter of the ground area sprayed defines apreselected shape, and so that the ground area sprayed receives asubstantially uniform coverage of fluid. The spray head alsoincludes a means for simultaneously increasing or decreasing thesize of all the discharge orifices so as to decrease or increase, respectively, the size of the area sprayed at a constant fluidflow rate, and thereby increase or decrease, respectively theprecipitation rate over the area sprayed. The spray head alsoincludes a construction so that the rate of fluid flow to the dis-charge orifices can be adjusted by rotating the top of the sprayhead, and thereby also adjust the fluid pressure at the dischargeorifice. In a preferred embodiment, the spray head includes aninner tubular member which telescopes within an outer tubular mem-ber to provide the simultaneous adjustment of the size of thedischarge orifices and wherein the inner tubular member is maderadially thinner so as to be more pressure expandable under fluidpressure to thereby tighten the fluid seal between the innertubular member and the outer tubular member.A method for constructing a fluid spray head adapted forspraying a specific pattern or shaped area wherein the fluid sprayhead has a plurality of circumferentially-spaced dischargeorifices including the steps of dividing said pattern into aplurality of sectors radiating from the desired location of thespray head so that each sector corresponds to one orifice, deter-mining the distance that the spray stream from each dischargeorifice must travel to cover its respective sector, and sizingeach orifice so that its cross-sectional area is proportional tothe square of the determined distance that its spray stream isdesired to travel.- 2 -
