AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe present invention concerns a method of using animproved sorptive coal material as a treatment mediumin the removal of methane gases which result from thedecay of organic matter in old refuse fills, and alsoto inhibit the further production of the gases fromsuch refuse fills. The method involves treating coalmaterials of known sorptive ability to make of them moregas sorptive and decay inhibiting treatment media, thenmaking a coal-in-water slurry of finely ground coal andwater and thereafter injecting the coal-in-water slurryinto the refuse fill through drill hole therein, and passingthe slurry thoughout the refuse fill under pressure sothat the improved gas sorptive coal comes into contactwith any gases in the fill to adsorb them, and leave aresidual coating of finely ground coal within and overthe refuse organic matter which serves to inhibit thefurther production of gases therefrom.
