Novel a-amino-phenylacetic acid derivatives having the formula:wherein R, R,, R₂, R₃, R₄ and Ar have the signification given in the description, e.g. the compound of the formulacan be prepared by hydrolyzing or alcoholyzing and derivative of an a-aminophenylaceticacid. They are useful as herbicidal, algicidal and plant growth regulating agents.
