In each case one coil (2) having in each case two coil sections (2a, 2b) which extend in the direction of the width of the sheet-metal strip (3) and project beyond its side edges is arranged above and below the moving sheet-metal strip (3). In order to concentrate the magnetic flux, in the case of one coil section (2a), a main core (1) is arranged which surrounds said coil section (2a) and projects beyond the side edges of the sheet-metal strip (3). In the case of the other coil section (2b), two auxiliary cores (6) are arranged which surround said coil section (2b). The auxiliary cores (6) are located in the region of the side edges of the sheet-metal strip (3) and here control the path of the secondary current which is induced in the sheet-metal strip in such a manner that the sheet-metal strip is heated uniformly over its width. The auxiliary cores (6) can be adjusted for matching to different dimensions of the sheet-metal strip (3). The induction heating device is used, for example, for annealing the sheet-metal strips.
