The sewage sludge is transported in a layer (45) in which it is vigorously agitated by means of an oxygen-containing gas exiting through a nozzle (42) and, during the agitation, is subjected to an electron beam (37) acting on the layer (45) from above. In order to reduce the treatment time of the sewage sludge and at the same time to achieve an improved sanitising effect, the oxygen-containing gas is withdrawn in the region of the electron beam (37) directly above the layer (45) by at least one extraction nozzle (46) and is partly fed back in the circulation into the flowing sewage sludge (45) and used for the agitation thereof.
