The tensioner is for a ship's mooring rope. The electric winch motor is constantly connected for ensuring continuous torque for the winch. A generator is driven by a load dependent variable speed drive whose speed is automatically varied in relation to the electrical load current. The control signal is derived from the mechanical torque which the winch motor exerts on the winch. It ensures constant tension in the rope and the winch rotates for rope retraction direction and also when the winch rotates in the rope paying out direction.
