The filling device uses a vacuum container (16) coupled to a pumped fluid supply line, for filling it to a given level, with a suction line connected to the container (16) above the fluid level. The vacuum container (16) is coupled to a differential manometer for maintaining a required vacuum. - The value of this is obtained by comparing the fluid column height for the differential manometer with that for a Torricelli manometer and using a formula in terms of the surface cross-section of each manometer column, the free surface of the liquid in the dish (27) of the differential manometer, the total height of the ampoule and the difference between the ltter and the required filling level. pref. means (29, 30, 31, 23) are provided for controlling the liquid column height of the differential manometer in dependence on that of the Torricelli manometer and hence regulating the vacuum in the vacuum container
