Hydrogen-rich synthesis gas prodn - by steam gasification of coal and catalytic reaction with steam

The raw gas product is divided into 2 streams, in one of which the H2:CO ratio is increased by catalytic reaction of the CO with steam to give H2 and CO2. Both streams are then cooled, combined and purified to give H2 H2 of synthesis purity. Specif. middle and light oils condensed from the unconverted stream are vaporised into the other stream before conversion. Dust and high-boiling tar are separated from both streams by washing with their own condensates and cooling, and the sut/tar mixt. is fed back into the coal gasifier. The combined gas produced is esp., suitable for hydrogenation of oxides of carbon to give almot pure methane which is interchangeable with natural gas. The middle and light oils from the unconverted stream are subjected to hydro-refining in the converter which reduces their S content.
