The chain tensioner comprises a tensioning lever (1) with circular chain gear head (12) engaging the chain (4) to be tensioned, and a support element (2) which, during tensioning, holds the chain (4) in contact with the head (12). At one end, the element has an anchoring point (8, 9) for a fixed chain part (3) such that the element is forced towards the head (12), and at the other end the element has a ratchet hook (5). An intermediate link (6) connects the lever (1) with the free end of the fixed chain part (3) and, via this, to the element (2). The ratchet hook (5) directly engages the links of the chain part (4) to be tensioned. The anchoring point may consist of two fixed hooks (8, 9) acting in opposite directions.
