The bearing plate, made of elastic material, provides support and space retention for steps in a staircase, or similar, laid on a stepped load bearing structure. Strip-shaped rubber or plastic bearing plates (1) are fitted transversely to the steps (10). Each has one or more grooves (2) across its longitudinal axis, for bending on an edge or inward-facing corner of the load bearing structure (12). - Each has areas of half thickness, flush with the top or bottom side, to permit overlaps of varying length with one or both of the adjacent bearing plates. There may be a number of grooves in each. This facilitates step laying, with individual position securing, and eliminates climatic influences on positioning.
