Appts. selects flat film from an indexing system. The appts. scans the top of the file index, containing vertically filed film, and lifts out the film required according to electromagnetic coding. Each film in the index has a keyed coding strip along its top edge. - A search unit (12) with fingers finds the required film n1) by using the keyed identification strip (2) on the top edge of the film. A side unit (13) swings up so that a lift finger on the side unit can raise the film from the file.
