The digital encoding disc is used to generate coded binary numbers, which represent the angular position of a shaft. It uses a minimum number of tracks and avoids restrictors on sensor spacing. The outer track (2) has a symmetrical patterns with a single sensor per 36 degrees arc. The inner track has (3) sensors per 36 degrees. Logic coupled to the sensors combines the generated signals to form a binary coding with a resolution of 3.6 degrees.
