The proximity switch assembly has several switching levels one above the other, each comprising a sensor supplied from an HF or LF oscillator, a trigger or flip flop at the sensor's output and an amplifier. When a control element approaches any switching level it causes that level's trigger to operate. The stacked switching levels are enclosed in a rectangular robust casing sealed against moisture. The electrical inputs and outputs to the levels consist of plugs on one side of the casing and sockets on the other side. The sensors are supplied from a shared oscillator.
