A detector (18) activates (19) a switch (20) when a dropout occurs in the FM carrier (a) from a video tape or disc. The video signal (b) thus has corresponding marker pulses (21) in the three sequential outputs of the switches (6). A NAND gate (22) responds to these by switching the colour signal outputs to zero and by switching the brightness signal output to an average value, for the duration of the drop-out. An absence of colour signal is considered preferable to the wrong colour signal.
