New cpds. of formula (I): RO-CS-S-S-CS-OR (Where R is a gp. of formula (II) or (III): where X is H, alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, or halogen; n = 1-20) are pref. prepd. by reacting ROH with CS2 in the presence of a strong alkali and oxidising the resulting alkali metal xanthate. (I) are pref. used as mol. wt. regulators in the radical polymerisation of conj. dienes (esp. chloroprene) or their copolymsn. with alpha-olefins.
