Nitric acid is sepd. from nitrated organic derivs. by introducing the mixt. into a bath of sulphuric acid heated to a temp. =5 degrees C above the b.p. of the mixt. thus provoking distn. of the nitric acid. The nitrated organic derivs. can then be recovered from the sulphuric acid. This method is used in the prepn. of nitrated organic derivs. to allow the safe use of nitric acid for direct nitration, without recourse to large quantities of acid which are subsequently wasted, and without the risk of explosion due to the presence of critical quantities of nitrated deriv. in the nitric acid.
