Aq. dispersions of alkyd resin-aminoplast combinations are prepd. by (1) reacting (A) 95-60 wt. % solvent-free aminoplast, whch is (95%) etherified with 1-4C monoalcohols, with (B) 5-40 wt. % methoxy-polyethylene glycol having ave. mol. wt. 300-3000 (400-1500) at 90-180 degrees C., opt. with addn. of a catalyst; (2) condensing 12-46 wt. % of reaction prod. of (A) and (B) at 70-100 degrees C. with (C) 54-88 wt. % alkyd resin and/or alkyd resin precursor, where (C) has limiting viscosity index 5-9 ml./g. (measured in CHCl3 at 20 degrees C.), and (3) dispersing the condensate at =100 degrees C. in water, contng. 0.5-2 wt. % (in)organic N base, while using ahigh-speed dispersing device. Final prod. pref. contains 2-6 wt. % built-in (B). Used as stoving lacquers. Dispersions have high stability; have self-emulsifying properties and require no further emulsifiers; and give stable films.
