The jack has a column round which the climbing mechanism fits, the latter comprising first and second sections separated from each other by a power operated actuators, which move them in relation to each other up and down the column. Each section has one or more catch levers rocking on transverse axes between two positions, in one of which they engage with apertures or lugs on the column at regular intervals. Thus as one of the sections is moved by the actuators in relation to the other, at least one lever of the latter engages with the column.
